The health, safety and well-being
of all our Vikings (our guests)
is of paramount importance to
Viking Splash Tours.

Viking Splash Tours operate six original World War II amphibious vehicles affectionately known as Dukws. Every year each vehicle must undergo a full schedule of tests and surveys to ensure that they are road and marine compliant and operate to the highest standards of health and safety.

At the water entry point customers are required to put on a lifejacket after the driver delivers a brief outline about safety on the water. The lifejackets supplied by Viking Splash Tours are Solas and CE approved buoyancy aids.
Seatbelts:
Seatbelts are provided and all passengers are requested to wear them.
Sponsons:
Before entering the water eight 2 ½ metre heavy duty rubber sponsons (large inflatable tubes) are attached to the sides of the vehicle for added buoyancy. These tubes were not in use during World War II but have been added by Viking Splash Tours for additional safety and comfort on the water.
RIB & ORL:
A minimum of two staff members are on board every vehicle that enters the water and a third crew member will remain on the shore to man a high-speed RIB (rigid inflatable boat) which contains a 30 person ORL (open reversible life raft) should there be an emergency on the water. It is worth noting that the RIB and ORL are additional safety features that Viking Splash Tours have on standby but which have never been utilised in an emergency.
Communications:
Every driver is provided with a two-way radio enabling instant communication with shore staff should an incident arise on the water.
Additional:
Each vehicle is equipped with an engine fire suppression system, two fire extinguishers, 2 boat-hooks and a 30-person first aid box for use in an emergency.

All Viking Splash Tours driver-guides undergo extensive training before conducting tours with the public. This training is conducted by a senior member of the driving team over a number of weeks and includes defensive driving techniques, proper road etiquette, boat and water safety, man-overboard and emergency disembarkation procedures in addition to tour guiding and delivery techniques. Every trainee Dukw driver-guide is signed off only after completing up to 10 tours safely and satisfactorily under the supervision of a senior driver before conducting tours alone.
